Kenward Elmslie was a writer, performer, editor and publisher associated with the New York School. This selection of recordings focuses on Elmslie's poetic works, many of which evolved over time into songs or parts of musicals. Kenward Elmslie worked closely with musicians, such as Kenneth Deifik, Lee Crabtree, and Steven Taylor, during live readings and creation of performance tracks. During readings, Elmslie would often read "I Remember's" (recollection poems), a poem format inspired by Joe Brainard. The recordings in this collection also often feature songs and poems from major musical works, including, "Bang Bang Tango," "City Junket," "The Grass Harp," and "Palais Bimbo Lounge Show." Along with musical works, Elmslie concurrently performed poems from published poetry works, including "Orchid Stories" and "Palais Bimbo Snapshots." Many of Elmslie's poetry books were published, or re-published, by his small press, Z Press.
