The National Guardian Newspaper was founded in 1948 in New York City as an independent left-wing weekly publication. With a change in editorial leadership in the 1970s, the newspaper was rebranded as The Guardian and intensified their focus on reporting in Southeast Asia and China in particular. The newspaper sponsored several tours in China during the years 1972 and 1973. The tour participants were recruited from newspaper subscribers and by word of mouth.
