Former University of Kansas museum staff member Carol Shankel donated her photo slides of 1980s China to the UC San Diego Library. The 740 slides document six trips taken by a group of faculty, students, and staff from the University of Kansas to China in the early 1980s. Educational exchanges between the U.S. and China were extremely limited in the 1970s. After China and the U.S. re-established diplomatic relations in 1979 and China began implementing its reform policies in the late 1970s, the country gradually opened its doors to the Western world. In fact, the 1980s are often referred to as the “honeymoon period” between the U.S. and China. Shankel’s delegation was among the first groups of U.S. visitors to China. Their first two trips, in 1980 and 1982, are especially significant. The sites they visited are rich in archaeological value, reflecting the academic interests of the group. For example, the cave temples at Longmen in Luoyang are among the three most famous cave temples in China.
Cities featured in the photographs include Tianjin, Beijing, Nanjing, Zhengzhou, Kaifeng, Anyang, Gongyi, Dengfeng, Luoyang, Xi’an, Guangzhou, Guilin, Yangshuo, Hangzhou, Suzhou, Wuxi, Zhenjiang, Yangzhou, Shanghai, Kunming, Leshan, Chengdu, Chongqing, Dazu, Yangtze River Gorges, Yichang, Wuhan, Hohhot, Datong, Jinan, Tai’an, and Qufu. The collection includes images of temples, pagodas, caves, sculptures, historic sites, landscapes, people, and villages.
This collection was digitized with the generous support from the Avery-Tsui Foundation in honor of Sally T. WongAvery.
