Return to Campus: Library Reopening

Information as of August 2021

The UC San Diego Library will fully reopen the Biomedical Library Building and Geisel Library to UC San Diego students, faculty, staff and the general public on September 7, 2021 and September 13, 2021, respectively.

What to Know About the Library's Reopening - Fall Quarter

As of September 7, 2021 (Biomedical Library Building) and September 13, 2021 (Geisel Library), our Library buildings will fully reopen to UC San Diego students, faculty, staff and the general public. As of these dates, the following will apply:

  • All study seats, computer stations, and amenities like charging lockers and whiteboards in both buildings are available without reservations.
  • Masks must be worn at all times while in the Library buildings per campus safety requirements.
  • In-person services have resumed and are available to patrons.
  • Print collections are fully accessible. Library materials may be checked out using your UC San Diego ID at self-checkout stations on the main floor of each building. Users may also continue to request items through UC Library Search for pick up at Campus Curbside.
  • Access to materials via HathiTrust’s Emergency Temporary Access Service (ETAS) has ended. Public domain items are available for full-text search in the HathiTrust Digital Library.
  • Physical Library spaces are open without distancing restrictions.
    • Group study rooms are available by reservation.
    • Special Collections & Archives is open Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Appointments are not necessary.
    • The Data & GIS Lab is open for self-service computer use. Some software is also available via virtual machines. Consultations are available by appointment.
    • As of October 4, 2021, the Digital Media Lab (DML) is open Monday - Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Consultations are available by emailing DML@ucsd.edu.
    • As of September 27, 2021, the Teaching + Learning Commons is open Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Sundays from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
    • More information about the reopening of Audrey's Cafe in Geisel’s East Commons is coming soon.
  • Special software is being used to monitor building density in real-time. Patrons may check availability prior to arrival via the Library’s website or the Waitz app.
  • In addition to regular cleaning services, we are working with campus Facilities Management to provide a safe and sanitary environment for our users and Library employees.
  • Self-service cleaning supplies continue to be available to our users.
  • Food and drink will not be allowed in Library buildings, except in the Audrey’s Café area in the Geisel Library.

Campus Community

Services available to the campus community during Fall Quarter 2021:

  • Borrowing: Browse and check out materials within the Library buildings or use Curbside Pickup to pick up Library materials from the Gilman Parking Structure. Renew Library materials online by signing into your Library account. Direct any questions about renewals, billing or borrowing to LibraryBorrowing@ucsd.edu.
  • Research Assistance: Visit our research assistance desk in Geisel’s main lobby or get real-time online consultations through our 24/7 chat service, via email, or schedule an appointment with a subject specialist. The chat service is staffed by local UC San Diego librarians during business hours and supported by a national network of librarians 24/7.
  • Special Collections & Archives: Special Collections & Archives is open Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Appointments are not necessary.
  • Article/Chapter Requests: All Library cardholders are eligible to request article/chapter scans of materials owned by UC San Diego for digital delivery.
  • Interlibrary Loan: The Interlibrary Loan (ILL) office can assist with requests for items not available in UC Library Search. Please send questions to ill@ucsd.edu.
  • Returns: You may now return Library items inside either Library building in addition to using the drive-up book returns at the Geisel turn-around and the book returns near Geisel’s entrance and outside the Biomedical Library Building.
  • Tech Lending: Technology items can be checked out at the service areas in both buildings or requested for Curbside Pickup. Laptops are not available through the Library, but UC San Diego students are eligible for the campus's Laptop Loaner Program, which enables students to request a laptop, hotspot or other technical support.
  • Tours: In-person Library tours are currently suspended, but you may visit the Geisel Library building’s 1st and 2nd Floors through our Virtual Library Tour.
  • Online Access to Materials: Access to materials via HathiTrust’s Emergency Temporary Access Service (ETAS) has ended. Public domain items are still available for full-text search in the HathiTrust Digital Library.
  • Printing: Printing is available in both Library buildings during open hours.

  • Building Access: Members of the community are once again permitted to access the Library buildings during open hours.
  • Borrowing: Current Community Borrower cardholders are eligible for both in person borrowing and check out, Curbside Pickup and Local Scanning services.
  • Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) Materials: Browse or view physical FDLP materials in the Library.
  • Special Collections: Special Collections & Archives is open Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Appointments are not necessary. Please contact spcoll@ucsd.edu with questions.
