The UCSD Physical and Community Planning Office administrative files document the executive and committee responsibilities for the impact of campus and urban planning development. The files are administrative documents reflecting the cooperative campus and regional planning efforts the University of California, San Diego; City of La Jolla; and City of San Diego developed between the 1960s through the 1980s. The materials include correspondence, reports, committee meeting minutes, and environmental impact assessment and planning reports.

The UCSD Physical and Community Planning Office, under the direction of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Resource Management and Planning, oversees the development and implementation of land use plans, provides a wide range of analyses and administrative services pertaining to urban and open space planning and design, and is responsible for environmental impact reviews, in accordance with the guidelines established by the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).

The Physical and Community Planning Office has undergone numerous changes in reporting line, scope and organization. It began as early as 1960 as a part of the Office of the Chancellor, under John Galbraith, and was administered by members of the Office of Architects and Engineers, the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Administration, Capital Planning, and working closely with City of San Diego planning commission.

The adminstrative files of the UCSD Physical and Community Planning Office are subject based and administrative working files. The records document the activities of several committees, the Committee on Campus/University Planning, and include correspondence and meeting minutes. The files also represent working files in collaboration with local La Jolla and San Diego community planning organizations and task forces, environmental impact reports, and traffic and parking planning documents. The adminstrative files are organized alphabetically in one series.
