"Countrymen: We have the inescapable obligation of evacuating women, children and the elderly from Madrid. We must avoid the pain of seeing our victory clouded by the death of our most loved ones. We must prevent the moment [in] which our children, those who must continue the work of peace and justice in the new Spain which at the cost of much blood we are beginning, face death [as] victims of the hatred and malice of international fascism, which want to make Spain into a colony of slaves. On the other hand, it must be considered that we should not make problems of useless provisions. The presence of women, children and the elderly in Madrid carries with it an investment of energy and material which should be employed for the benefit of the defenders of our capital. What less must be done for these self-sacrificing men than to facilitate their work by all means? The minimal effort which can be done for them is to evacuate, with the best reason having guaranteed the arrangement and maintenance and advantage of being safe from the shrapnel which the planes of fascist invader drop on unarmed people. They have seen that with an unyielding discipline in the front lines, in the defense of Madrid there is a great force of ferocious combatants, of ferocious and consistent men, prepared so that the criminal intent of the fascist barbarism is not carried out. They believe that killing women and children achieve the demoralization of those that are fighting, but this is not certain. Madrileños: by evacuating your families you will frustrate the bloodthirsty ideas of our inferior enemy and you will contribute to the conquest of final victory! EVACUATION IS A WEAPON IN THE DEFENSE AGAINST FASCISM."
