San Borja (Jesuit, 1762). 1950s. "A ruined mission, once the cultural center of an area comprising some 3,600 sq. mi., today a tiny ranching community centering around a massive stone church. The mission buildings are in a broad valley dominated by barren mountains covered with forests of cirio and giant cactus. Near the church is a cluster of adobe shacks with a palm grove, orchard, and garden irrigated from several tiny hot springs." |
