Special Collections & Archives Covid-19 Services

Special Collections & Archives (SC&A) offers research appointments for UC San Diego faculty, staff, and students. Research appointments will be limited to requests that are not available online, or that cannot be fulfilled through our remote services.

UC San Diego users are encouraged to request scans rather than an appointment whenever possible. UC San Diego graduate and undergraduate students can receive up to 250 pages of reference quality scans for free and should receive their orders within 1 week.

We deeply value our community of researchers beyond our campus, and will continue to offer scanning services to non-UC San Diego researchers, in accordance with our duplication policy.

How to request an appointment

Appointments will only be confirmed after you place requests via our Special Collections Request System and complete a consultation with a librarian. Appointments must be made least one week in advance, and some requests may require additional notice.

You can initiate a research appointment in one of two ways:

  1. Place requests directly through our Library Catalog or Finding Aids. Before finalizing your submission, choose between “duplication order” or “request an appointment.” A librarian will contact you to set up a brief Zoom consultation. Following the consultation, we will confirm your appointment and send you instructions regarding visiting and using materials safely.
  2.  Request an appointment or consultation before requesting materials. A librarian will reach out via email and/or set up a brief Zoom consultation to assist you in making your selections, and discuss whether duplication of materials or scheduling a visit would be best.

Approved visitors will be booked for a 2-hour appointment between 9-11 a.m. or 1-3 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays. Appointments are for one person only; there will be only one person in the Reading Room at any time.

Campus members approved for special research appointments agree to:
