Gato Negro Ediciones is an independent publisher based in Mexico City. Its publications are printed in English and Spanish and cover such interdisciplinary topics as the arts, cultural theory, literature, politics and social movements. The UC San Diego Library recently acquired the majority of the press’s 140 publications.

Advocating for the liberty of thought, Gato Negro has focused its publishing on the “so-often sequestered view of contemporary society” and given voice to artists and authors who may have been silenced in the past. They have said that the message is solely between the reader and the author, allowing each to consume, convey, and expand upon their own point of view.

As the publisher of Gato Negro Ediciones has stated: “Each edition within the collection, whether it focuses on political manifestos or art theory or prose, has a purpose and real-life application in the educational realm.”

The next time you visit Geisel Library, be sure to check out the materials on display. They will be on view through December 13, 2021.
