Portrait of William R. Riedel, who became the first curator of the Geological Collections at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1955. Riedel's work on stratigraphy and on the analysis of sediment cores was especially important to the Deep Sea Drilling Program, and he invested a significant amount of time on the JOIDES Planning Committee which oversaw DSDP. He also served as chair of the SIO Geological Research Division from 1978-1983. In 1990, Riedel was named curator of DSDP cores and served on the JOIDES Information Handling Panel. William R. Riedel becoming a staff member at Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1956.His specialty has been the intricately shelled radiolarians, a complex group of organisms that he has found defies easy classification. They can, however, be used as indicators of geologic age. He has analyzed radiolarians from all the oceans and from marine sediments on land, and has, for example, been able to establish a radiolarian zonation that divides the Cretaceous period into seven parts. He also has been the curator of the institution's collection of sea-floor cores and dredged rocks. September 12, 1978.
