Oceanographer Alan Churchill Jones shown here uses a strip recorder during the Capricorn Expedition (1952-1953). A chart recorder is an instrument used to record various process and electrical signals. This expedition mapped seamounts and guyots and other features of the Pacific seafloor. Scientists studied the 35,400 foot deep Tonga Trench, the second deepest place in the ocean, and measured heat flow on the East Pacific Rise. 1952.

Reef corals growing at three fathoms on a rocky pinnacle known as Falcon Bank, this area had more luxuriant growth compared to Alexa Bank even though this area was a volcanic island several hundred feet above water just 20 years before this photo was taken. The photo was taken during the Capricorn Expedition (1952-1953), which was the first Scripps expedition to use scuba divers to explore the Pacific. 1952.
