  6. Heat flow operation on R/V Horizon: John G. Sclater, John Phillips Greenhouse and George W. Hohnhaus. When the ship left Suva at the start of Leg IV the main heat flow program began. This involved preparing the wire, then putting the spear-like probe over and tuning the pinged, a self-contained echo sounder, before attaching it to the same wire 300 feet above the probe. On a seismic station the explosive charges are small when the ships are close together, but get bigger as the shooting ship moves away.
