Hsu, left, and Dr. William B.F. Ryan, right. Charles Simon, of the Glomar Challenger drilling crew, is in the middle. An evaporite is a chemical precipitation formed from evaporation of salt or sea water. Dr. Hsu is from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, while Dr. Ryan is from Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory.
