  3. Gustaf Arrhenius, a professor of oceanography at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. His research has encompassed the origin and early evolution of ocean-atmosphere, molecular evolution toward life, surface reactions on minerals, ocean sedimentation, crystal chemistry of natural and synthetic solids, superconductivity, cosmochemistry, prebiotic chemistry and the earliest sedimentary record of life on Earth and Mars. Since 1986, Arrhenius has been on the advisory board of UC's Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP). Arrhenius was elected Guggenheim Fellow 1957-58, received the American Chemical Society PRF Award 1961, and the NASA Group Achievement Award 1973 and the Hans Pettersson Gold Medal of the Royal Swedish Academy in 1998.   15. Oceanographer's Roger Revelle holding some cable and about to be spiked by Gustaf Arrhenius, as a joke for the camera, during the Capricorn Expedition (1952-1953). This was the first Scripps Institution of Oceanography expedition to use scuba divers to explore the Pacific. Research ships Horizon and Spencer F. Baird mapped seamounts and guyots and other features of the Pacific seafloor. Scientists studied the 35,400 foot deep Tonga Trench, the second deepest place in the ocean, and measured heat flow on the East Pacific Rise. 1952.
