Edward A. Frieman, as a physicists he developed a reputation as a leader in plasma physics and fusion theory. He held a variety of scientific and public offices, such as Director of Energy Research, US Department of Energy, in the early 1980's, member of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) and also was a member of the National Academy of Sciences. His work on the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) was a particularly high profile assignment. From July 1, 1986 until his retirement on August 31, 1996, Frieman served as the eighth director of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Vice Chancellor-Marine Research, UCSD and Dean of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. His faculty appointment was Professor of Oceanography. August 11, 1966.
