UNDERWAY BATHYMETRY AND MAGNETICS PLOT - Dr. Manik Talwani, left, Director of Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory, and Dr. Gleb Udintsev, member of the Institution of Oceanology, USSR Academy of Sciences, Moscow, USSR, are studying a bathymetry and magnetics plot made by Deep Sea Drilling Project technicians as D/V Glomar Challenger prepared to depart Site 352. The site was southeast of Iceland and the last occupied before sailing to Amsterdam, The Netherlands, to end the cruise.

Von Herzen, were Co-Chief Scientists for the Third Leg of the Deep Sea Drilling Project, directing the scientific program aboard the drill ship Glomar Challenger across the Mid-Atlantic Ridge from Dakar to Rio de Janeiro, beginning around December 1. Here with an oscilloscope in the background, Maxwell and Von Herzen examine the temperature sensing element of a heart probe used in conjunction with retrievable coring operations.
