  1. Thomas Wayland Vaughan (1870-1952), a geologist, paleontologist, and oceanographer. He was an authority on marine sediments, fossil, corals and American stratigraphy. From 1924-1936, he served as the director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography and brought the institution to a leading and world renowned oceanographic research center
