Geographically Takaroa is part of the King George Islands; it is an atoll in the Tauamotu group in French Polynesia, it is known for its fine pearls, including black pearls. This was the first Scripps Institution of Oceanography expedition to use scuba divers to explore the Pacific. 1952.
