  7. The research vessel Horizon, formerly operated by the University of California's Scripps Institution of Oceanography, was a converted Navy sea-going tug. She is 143 feet long and has a cruising range of approximately 6,800 miles. Accomodations were available for 16 scientists and 19 crew members. She served the University between 1948, and late 1968, and steamed 610,522 miles and spent 4,207 days at sea in short-and long-duration cruises. Horizon participated in many oceanographic biological surveys carried out under the California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations and conducted numerous, lengthy geological and geophyscial expeditions in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. She was sold by the University in December, 1968.
