  59. Roger Revelle and Jeffery Dean Frautschy gloating over the wire cable delivered to the research vessel Spencer F. Baird on the eve of the departure of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography's Capricorn Expedition (1952-1953). This was the first Scripps expedition to use scuba divers to explore the Pacific. Scientists mapped seamounts and guyots and other features of the Pacific seafloor. Scientists also studied the 35,400 foot deep Tonga Trench, the second deepest place in the ocean, and measured heat flow on the East Pacific Rise. October 25, 1952.
