  4. Elizabeth Louise Venrick, a research oceanographer and lecturer in the Marine Life Research Group (MLRG) at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, who has worked at the Institution since earning her Ph.D. from the Institution in marine ecology in 1969. Within MLRG, she studies the distribution and ecology of oceanic phytoplankton (microscopic plant life), which are at the base of the marine food chain. Among her many achievements from 1976 to the beginning of 1982, she served on the five-member California Fish and Game Commission. Appointed by Governor Jerry Brown, she was the first woman, the first Ph.D., and the first expert in marine science to serve on the commission during its more than 100-year history. June 1994.

  6. Miriam Kastner, research oceanographer and professor of Geology at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Among her many research interest a few are; the role of fluids in the transport of heat and solutes and in sediment accretion and diagenesis in subduction zones; Chemical paleoceanography; Sedimentary geochemistry and diagenesis: mineralogical, chemical, and isotopic studies of recent and older sediments; processes responsible for the formation of submarine hydrothermal deposits; and the origin of present day and ancient phosphorites, dolomites, and cherts. June 1994.
