Grave of Anthropologist Arthur Bernard Deacon

Grave marker of Anthropologist A. Bernard Deacon (1903 - 1927), author of "Malekula, A Vanishing People in the New Hebrides", is buried on the hill above Wintua. Considered a brilliant, promising student by his Cambridge mentors, Deacon arrived at South West Bay in January 1926 and was about to leave the islands to write up his findings when he died of blackwater fever (malignant malaria). A fellow student, Camilla Wedgwood, agreed to put together Deacon's field notes for publication under the title noted above. Villagers today learn custom or culture from A. B. Deacon's book, originally published in 1934.
