The instrument on the right was the Bottom Processing Package (BPP) which was carried on the D/V Glomar Challenger (ship) and used during the Deep Sea Drilling Project. Once deployed data was transmitted over a single Electro-Mechanical (EM) coaxial conductor cable to the BPP, and the data received was stored in real-time for up to 45 days. The Scripps Institution of Oceanography research vessel, R/V Melville (ship) can be seen in the background. 1983.
