A seaworthy computer signed on for duty today aboard the Thomas Washington, research vessel of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Workmen are shown here on the main deck, moving the computer through the ship's doors to the laboratory where it will be installed. The computer, an IBM 1800 data acquisition and control system, is designed to function in fair weather and foul and will be able to withstand the ship's pitching, rolling and yawing motions. It will permit scientists to process data while on oceanographic expeditions. The installation of the computer is part of a joint researhc project being conducted by the University of California, San Diego Scripps Institution of Oceanography and International Business Machines Corporation
