This digital file is a surrogate of an item from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Technical Publications Office Records (Box 3, Folder 1).

The computer, an IBM 1800 data acquisition and control system, was the first of its kind to be installed on board a research ship. It provided scientists with immediate analyses of research projects and experiments conducted while at sea. Previously data was collected by instruments during long voyages and processed by land-based computers after the ship returned to port. The installation of the computer was part of a joint research project being conducted by Scripps Institution of Oceanography and International Business Machines Corporation.
