================================================================================ Satellite\COSMO-SkyMed\readme_COSMO-SkyMed.txt COSMO-SkyMed Data Description Roland Romeiser - rromeiser@miami.edu - 2020-2021 ### Satellite\COSMO-SkyMed\Images\ ### This folder contains quicklook (low quality) versions of 36 SAR images of the test area acquired by the four COSMO-SkyMed satellites in September - October 2017. The images are provided as PNG files embedded in KMZ files, so they can be viewed in Google Earth. Alternatively, the PNG files can be extracted by opening the KMZ files in 7-Zip or a similar software tool. The quicklook images should be used for orientation only. Any use of the SAR images for quantitative analysis or for figures in publications or presentations should be based on the full-resolution data, which are provided at about 5 m (1 m) resolution, while the data you see here have been reduced to about 40 m (10 m), where the numbers in parantheses are for the case of the Enhanced Spot- light Mode image 20170909T133804_CSKS1. The full-resolution data will also include detailed information on incidence angles, calibration constants, etc. The COSMO-SkyMed images for this project were downlinked and processed by CSTARS under license from ASI - Agenzia Spaziale Italiana. (C) ASI 2017. All rights reserved. Distributed by e-GEOS. Due to copyright protection, we cannot include the original data in this project data archive. All images were acquired in Stripmap HIMAGE Mode, VV polarization, except case 20170909T133804_CSKS1, which was acquired in Enhanced Spotlight Mode, VV. Archive structure: The archive Images_Preview.tar.gz contains the KMZ files. The KMZ file name format is YYYYMMDDTHHMMSS_$$$$$.kmz, where dates and times are start times of the SAR image acquisitions and $$$$$ is an identifier of the satellite that acquired the SAR image (CSKS1 to CSKS4). The internal wave shapes are provided as sets of shapefiles in ArcGIS shapefile format. These files can be opened in ArcGIS as well as Google Earth. Archive structure: The archive IntWaves_CSTARS.tar.gz contains the shapefile sets, one set per image in a separate folder. The folder name format is YYYYMMDDTHHMMSS_$$$$_IntWaves_CSTARS, where dates and times are start times of the SAR image acquisitions and $$$$ is the identifier of the satellite that acquired the SAR image (CSKS1 to CSKS4). All dates and times are given in UTC, not local time. Authors: Julia DiLeo (1), Roland Romeiser (2), and Hans C. Graber (Co-PI) - hgraber@cstars.miami.edu ### Satellite\COSMO-SkyMed\Winds_CSTARS\ ### This folder contains wind fields derived from 36 COSMO-SkyMed SAR images of the test area acquired by CSTARS, University of Miami, in September - October 2017. The wind fields are provided as NetCDF files containing 10 m equivalent neutral winds on a 1000 m × 1000 m grid. They were derived from the SAR images using an algorithm developed at CSTARS. Higher resolution winds are available on request. Archive structure: The archive Winds_CSTARS.tar.gz contains the actual NetCDF files; Winds_CSTARS_Preview.tar.gz contains corresponding KMZ files for a quick visualization of the wind fields in Google Earth. The file name format is YYYYMMDDTHHMMSS_$$$$$_Winds_CSTARS.nc / YYYYMMDDTHHMMSS_$$$$$_Winds_CSTARS.kmz, where dates and times are start times of the SAR image acquisitions and $$$$$ is the identifier of the satellite that acquired the SAR image (CSKS1 to CSKS4). All dates and times are given in UTC, not local time. Variables in the NetCDF files: lat = geographical latitude (decimal degrees) lon = geographical longitude (decimal degrees) eastward_wind = eastward component of wind u10 northward_wind = northward component of wind u10 eastward_wind and northward_wind have been set to NaN over land.
