Diary, 1827-1876
- Description
-
Bound holograph diary begun on 28 Sept. 1827 and concluded shortly after 1 May 1876. The diary recounts Cline's naval voyages to the West Indies, the northern countries of South America, Japan, and China aboard the U.S. naval ships Canadaigua, Saco, and Hartford. Cline's service was interrupted from 23 Nov. 1873 to 2 Oct. 1874 because of an illness he contracted in the West Indies. After recuperating at his Brooklyn, N.Y., residence, he was ordered to travel across the country to San Francisco to join a ship departing for the Far East, and a narrative of his overland journey is included in the diary. The diary concludes with Cline's tour of Washington, D.C., and his visits to Arlington National Cemetery, the Corcoran Art Gallery, and other tourist sites
