Isolation in Community

The artwork represents my overall feelings that I have gathered from my experience here on campus during my first quarter of my first year here at UCSD.

I am an American Filipina born and raised in southern California. Coming into the UCSD campus as a senior in high school, I felt very at home on the campus and very welcomed, so I chose this school as my home for the next four years. As the first quarter of my first year has passed, I have experienced many welcoming as well as excluding times. The people are very kind but there are times when of exclusiveness are very evident.

For the Culture, Art, and Technology (CAT) 1: Migration Narratives in the Sixth College writing program taught by Amanda Solomon in the Fall of 2016, students were asked to think about how they view the current campus climate and respond to the fourth chapter of Angela Kong's dissertation, "Re-examining Diversity Policy at University of California, San Diego: The Racial Politics of Asian Americans" Thesis (Ph. D.)--University of California, San Diego, 2014.
