Satellite weather picture of Typhoon Gilda received aboard the D/V Glomar Challenger (ship). The drilling vessel was caught between two storms as she completed Leg 56 of the International Phase of Ocean Drilling of the Deep Sea Drilling Project. Work on the Japanese Trench sites some 150 to 200 nautical miles of the northeastern coast of Japan was done during the cruise. Gilda, lower left, has the cloud spiral and eye of a tropical storm.
