The Point Loma lighthouse and caretakers houses when men were gathered at the lighthouse to salvage the wreck of the "Loma" a yacht given to the Marine Biological Association of San Diego by E.W. Scripps for research purposes; it ran aground near the lighthouse on July 25, 1906. The Association became the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. July 25, 1906.
