D/V Glomar Challenger (ship) at dock. The ship was named for the oceanographic survey vessel HMS Challenger and for Global Marine, with Glomar being a truncation. She was a 120 meters long deep sea research and scientific drilling vessel used for Deep Sea Drilling Project, and managed by Scripps Institution of Oceanography under contract to the National Science Foundation (NSF). The ship was designed by the National Science Foundation and University of California and was built by Levingston Shipbuilding Company in Orange, Texas. 1978.
