The practice of orthopedic surgery and the the orthopedic industry have each evolved over an interdependent history, characterized by shared interests and mutual reliance. Beginning in the 1950s with the advent of stainless steel, followed by other biocompatible materials, surgeons began reaching out to industry to provide the materials and manufacturing expertise to develop early orthopedic implants. Indeed, it was the ingenuity of practicing surgeons, in search of innovative treatment for their patients, that served as the genesis of the orthopedic device and implant industry
