- Description
-
Naval log book by first officer T. Robinson describing the China Trade voyage of the Ship Active, under the command of Captain Robert Clay. The Active proceeded from Philadelphia to the Cape Verde Islands, and by the end of August 1801 had rounded the Cape of Good Hope. By mid November the ship was off the Philippines, after which she "run direct for the coast of China." The log ends with an entry made at anchor in Macao Roads on November 19. The journal notes currents, prevailing winds, routes, and landmarks, commenting on the accuracy of contemporary charts and guides, and making frequent recommendations based on experience
