(Composer's note) In between New York and California - in between composition and improvisation - in between abstract music and jazz. With In Between States I'm trying to bring together the streams of my work and explore the overlapping boundaries among disciplines. Composed sections alternate with improvised sections in which the performers are asked to spontaneously extrapolate from notated music, incorporate their own ideas, and engage in group dialogues. A cross-fade occurs: as the composed sections progress, more and more improvisational strategies come in to play, while at the same time the improvised sections start to incorporate more and more aspects of my jazz composition, 'Half-Light.'
