During visit of 81 Russian scientists and technician to Scripps Institution of Oceanography recently (June 20), Dr. Melvin N.A. Peterson, at right, of Del Mar, co-principal investigator and manager of the Deep Sea Drilling Project, presents set of "Initial Reports of Deep Sea Drilling Project" to Dr. Alexander Lisitzin, second from left. Dr. Lisitzin, a geochemist with Institute of Oceanology, USSR Academy of Sciences, is chief scientist aboard Russian reserch vessel Mendeleev during ship's current four-months' expedition into Pacific Ocean. Looking on are, from left, Dr. E.M. Suzymumov, deputy chief, Department of Marine Expeditions, USSR Academy of Sciences; Dr. Y.A. Bogdanov, deputy chief scientist of the expedition; and ship's Capt. Anatoly S. Svitaylo. Mendeleev was berthed at San Pedro and group came to La Jolla by bus to visit Scripps scientists. Scripps manages DSDP for National Science Foundation.
