James G. Williams, was the Scripps Institution of Oceanography marine superintendent from May 1982 to December 1992. Following commissioning in the U.S. Navy, he served for 29 years rising to the rank of Captain. During his tenure, Scripps obtained R/V Robert G. Sproul (ship), and he guided a difficult but successful midlife stretch and refit of R/V Melville (ship), and participated in winning the national competition for assignment of AGOR 24 know as the R/V Roger Revelle (ship). May 28, 1987.
