Evaluation Panel - Members of the Deep Sea Drilling Project's Technical Evaluation Committee meeting at Scripps Institution of Oceanography with Project officials to evaluate a proposed Formation Tester, a new safety-test tool. The new tool is a device that may be run as part of the drill string (while drilling) just above the bit. The tool is expected to increase the safety of DSDP deep ocean operations and increase their capability by allowing engineers and scientists to measure formation pressures and sample fluids in the deep bore hole. The proposed Formation Tester could have the ability to identify potential troublesome high pressure zones before hole conditions become too critical. In addition, the new tool will have a limited capability to seal off the bore hole in competent formations and pump high-weight mud or cement above the packer seal. Conferees, l to r, were James T. Dean, Member, Global Marine Inc., Archie R. McLerran, National Science Foundation Field Project Officer for DSDP; Robert D. Townsend, Jr., Member, Mobile Technical Services, Inc.; Stanley T. Serocki, DSDP Development Engineer; John R. Shore, Member Chevron Oil Field Research Company; William F. Allinder, Member, Texaco, Inc.; Melvin N.A. Peterson, DSDP Principal Investigator and Project Manager; T.C. Bangs, Member Union Oil Company and Frank C. MacTernan, DSDP Deputy Project Manager
