Von Herzen, were Co-Chief Scientists for the Third Leg of the Deep Sea Drilling Project, directing the scientific program aboard the drill ship Glomar Challenger across the Mid-Atlantic Ridge from Dakar to Rio de Janeiro, beginning around December 1. Here with an oscilloscope in the background, Maxwell and Von Herzen examine the temperature sensing element of a heart probe used in conjunction with retrievable coring operations. Both men received their Ph.D. degrees from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, managing institution for the Deep Sea Drilling Project. 1968
