H.M.S. Challenger - This is a model of the first oceanographic research vessel, H.M.S. Challenger, which circled the world for 3 1/2 years beginning in 1872. She was 200 feet long, had a beam of 38 feet, and her speed was 10 knots maximum on best day. Originally a 2,306-ton corvette in the Royal Navy, she was a full rigged, spar-decked vessel with auxiliary steam power of 1,234 horsepower.
