Description

This collection includes a selection of still images, slides, and reformatted sound and moving image recordings from the papers of oceanographer Walter Munk.

Walter H. Munk (1917-2018) was a distinguished physical oceanographer and professor of geophysics at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego. The collection documents some highlights from Munk's scientific career, and some of the subject areas where he was an influential theorist, including wave forecasting and acoustic tomography. There are a small number of portraits from Munk's youth, recordings of lectures and films documenting his research, images of Munk teaching in the mid-1960s, and Munk's slide collection. Munk's slides were kept in batches, or groups, linked to topics on which he was frequently asked to present. The original groupings are preserved in this digital collection with the notes and labels from his personal inventory transcribed.
