A collection of sound and video recordings from Theodore "Ted" Schwartz, Melanesian anthropologist, UC San Diego Professor of Anthropology and specialist on the Manus people of Papua New Guinea, digitized from reel-to-reel audio tapes and audiocassettes, and from 16mm and Super-8 (8mm) films found in his papers. The sound recordings were created during Schwartz's research expeditions from 1953 through the 1990s. Most of the interviews are conducted in Tok Pisin, the lingua franca of the majority of people in Papua New Guinea, as well as other local languages from Manus Province. The recordings feature interviews, cultural and religious ceremonies, lectures, songs and unique linguistic studies of various peoples and villages on Manus Island, Papua New Guinea. Some of the recordings are conversations Schwartz had with Margaret Mead, as well as noted informants and other prominent people including Paliau Maloat and John Kilepak. Also included are a few select recordings of Schwartz's classroom lectures and his New Age religion study. The films were shot by Ted Schwartz, his spouse at the time, Lenora Shargo Schwartz, and Margaret Mead. They feature village life on Manus Island, religious and cultural ceremonies, various assessments such as Gesell developmental tests, and footage of Margaret Mead and Ted Schwartz's arrival and time on the island. The films range in date from 1953 to 1975.
