Geisel Overnight Study Commons

Eligible Users

Open to current UC San Diego students, faculty, and staff only. Valid UC San Diego ID card required during overnight hours. On request, users must show valid UC San Diego-issued ID card. Users without valid UC San Diego-issued ID card must leave the building until regular library hours resume.

Location and Access

Floors 1 and 2 of Geisel Library, except the Tunnel. After 10 p.m., eligible users may enter through main entrance to the two floors. Access prohibited to closed and staff-only areas.

Services

Basic safety and security is provided overnight. Other library services are not provided. Security staff will report equipment problems, but cannot provide computer, printing, reserves, or research assistance.

Hours

Overnight Study hours begin at 10:00 p.m. and end at 7:30 a.m., Sunday through Friday. Available during Fall, Winter, and Spring academic quarters only (excluding campus holidays). Policies include any additional overnight hours or areas offered during final exam periods.

View regular Geisel building hours.

Seating available for about 500, including 100 computer workstations, as well as large and small study tables, individual study carrels, comfortable chairs, group study rooms. Electrical outlets, printers, and scanners also available. The Active Learning Lab (Geisel Floor 2 East) is open overnight, but the Digital Media Lab is not.

Security and Reporting Problems

Library Security staff provided to ensure safety and security overnight. Report security problems or concerns to Security staff on duty or email Library_Safety_and_Security@AD.UCSD.EDU. Report non-emergency problems related to Overnight Study Commons to lflor@ucsd.edu.

Emergencies

Report emergencies to Security staff on duty, call Campus Police at 858-534-4357, or call 911.

Use Policies

  • Conduct: The UC San Diego Student Conduct Code and Library Use & Conduct Policies apply to all library areas at all times. For safety and security, additional policies apply to the Geisel Overnight Study Commons. Failure to follow these policies may result in temporary or permanent loss of access to UC San Diego Library facilities.
  • Food and Drink: Please refer to the Food and Drink Policy
  • Sleeping: University policy (PPM 516-10.3) and the Library Use & Conduct Policies restrict library areas from being used for sleeping or living quarters. Camping equipment (tents, sleeping bags) and furniture arrangements designed for sleeping are not permitted.
