Records of the Vice Chancellor, Student Affairs at the University of California, San Diego contain administrative files related to student life, student committees and activities, facilities, and campus student services.

The Office of the Vice Chancellor, Student Affairs works to assist and engage students from the time of recruitment, through their enrollment and academic careers, and finally through graduation and career advancement. Central to all of its efforts are the ideals of inclusivity, integrity, growth, and health. From its establishment in 1963, the office has aimed to support student success and create an innovative, collaborative community of faculty, staff, and students.

The position of Vice Chancellor, Student Affairs has undergone several name changes since its 1963 inception. The first UC San Diego Academic Master Plan, approved in principle by the University of California Regents on February 15, 1963, included the position of the Dean of Student Affairs. The Dean reported directly to the Chancellor and focused on increasing enrollment growth and residential facilities. In 1969, the name of the position changed to Vice Chancellor and Dean of Student Affairs, and in 1971 the name changed to Vice Chancellor, Student Affairs.

The Office of the Vice Chancellor, Student Affairs employs professional staff and student employees. The Office is responsible for student activities, including orientations, residential life, student organizations and government. They also oversee financial aid, student employment, and student conduct, discipline, and counseling. The Deans of Student Affairs at each of the colleges report to both their College Provost and the Vice Chancellor, Student Affairs.

In 2008, Vice Chancellor Penny Rue launched a Student Affairs Strategic Plan. Guided by this plan, Vice Chancellor Rue raised $18 million for the Student Affairs budget, initiating and supporting a variety of programs that promoted community, diversity, and student health and safety. Working with Alumni Affairs and the Office of Research Affairs, Rue helped to build the Institute on Building Communities for Social Justice Practice, the Campus Community Centers, and the Diversity Working Group. She also created a campaign to address student mental health, emergency, and distress services, and developed a Behavioral Threat Assessment Team.

Current events and social issues have played a significant role in the development of the Student Affairs office and its efforts. Notable among these events was the Compton Cookout, a February 2010 event in which several students hosted an off-campus party encouraging blackface, stereotypical outfits that mocked minorities, and ridicule of Black History Month. This event and the subsequent increase in racially motivated threats against minority students and historical criticism over the racial environment of UC San Diego led to massive protests, criticism regarding the administration's response, and the creation of the student-led "Real Pain, Real Action" campaign that called on the university to create effective campus change. What followed was a further push to create a safe place for minority students in a variety of ways. In 2011, the campus instituted the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) course requirement for all undergraduate students. The Black Resource Center was founded in 2013. The incident was a historical moment for UCSD and helped to shape student affairs and diversity initiatives from its occurrence into the present day.

Rue's strategic plan was updated by Vice Chancellor Juan C. González in 2014. Along with enhancing the Strategic Plan, he created the Office of Student Retention and Success, and developed new ways to increase enrollment and retention of underrepresented minority students. He started the Chancellor's Associated Scholars Program (CASP) in 2014 to specifically support California students and increased enrollment in the OASIS Summer Bridge program. Additionally, he aimed to address concerns regarding student basic needs, establishing the Triton Concern Line and supporting the creation of the Triton Food Pantry.

In early 2019, Vice Chancellor Alysson Satterlund gathered data to identify how well student needs were being met in a time of rapid change and expansion. The Office of the Vice Chancellor, Student Affairs then launched a new five-year Student Affairs Strategic Plan. The new plan is currently listed as having five main goals: student experience, student success, well-being, inclusion and equity, and partnership and community. The Office of Student Affairs began to set goals in order of priority in Fall 2019 and plans to implement various activities to reach these goals, including individual goal assessment plans, until 2025.

Since 1963, Deans of Student Affairs have included Theodore W. Forbes (1963-1966), George S. Murphy, Jr. (1966-1977), Lynn C. Naibert (Executive Dean, 1969-1970), and Willie Smith (1970-1971). Vice Chancellors of Student Affairs have included Howard F. Hunt (Interim, 1977-1978), Richard H. Armitage (1978-1981), Joseph W. Watson (1981-2007), Penny Rue (2007-2013), Alan Houston (Interim, 2013-2014), Juan C. González (2014-2017), Drew Calandrella (Interim, 2018), and Alysson Satterlund (2018-present).

The files also document early campus activities and publications, including the Trident Yearbook; the student newspapers The Indicator, Revelle Times, Sandscript, and The Triton Times; early religious activity on campus; lecture series; and public events programs.
