The Chancellor acts as head of administration and has general authority over the campus. He is responsible for setting up the administrative structure and insuring that the various units function properly. He has specific delegated authority to sign employment contracts of faculty and staff and to represent the University in public forums.
Herbert F. York was appointed first Chancellor of the University of California, San Diego, in 1961. He was followed by Chancellor John S. Galbraith (1964-1968), Chancellor William J. McGill (1968-1970), Acting Chancellor Herbert F. York (1970-1972), Chancellor William D. McElroy (1972-1980), Chancellor Richard C. Atkinson (1980-1995), and Chancellor Robert C. Dynes (1996-present).
