Library Holiday Closure 2016

As part of the campus-wide holiday closure, ALL UC San Diego Library buildings will be CLOSED Saturday, December 24, 2016, through Tuesday, January 3, 2017.

Library buildings will reopen Wednesday, January 4, 2017.


The Library's Hours web pages have been updated to reflect hours for both before and after the holiday closure.


Library Services during the Holiday Closure

Online Resources

Access to most online Library resources will be unaffected during the holiday closure. UC San Diego students, faculty and staff can access library-licensed resources by going through the campus proxy server or VPN.

Library Research Guides are available to help you navigate our online resources.


Renewing Items (including ILL items)

No items are due for return during the closure.

  • To request a renewal of a UCSD Library item, use your Library Account.
  • To request an ILL renewal, use My ILL Requests or send a message to ill@ucsd.edu with the subject line "Renewal Request." Note: Renewal requests received Dec. 17, 2016 through Jan. 3, 2017 will be processed beginning Jan. 4, 2017.

Returning Items (including ILL items)

No items are due for return during the closure.

Items may be returned at any time to the following Library book return locations:

  • Curbside return bins in the roundabout at the end of Hopkins Drive, just west of Geisel Library
  • Book return slots located at the Geisel Library entrance

Note: The Biomedical Library Building book return slot will be CLOSED.

Information & Research Assistance

During the closure, limited information and research assistance is available through the Library's 24/7 online chat service. Note: During this time questions are answered by librarians from non-UC academic libraries. Questions referred to UC San Diego librarians will be answered starting Jan. 4, 2017 and in the order in which they were received. Students, faculty and staff who send questions by text or email, or leave phone messages during the closure period, will start receiving replies on Jan. 4, 2017.

Course Reserves

  • Instructors may continue to submit requests during the closure by logging into the Course Reserves system. Requests are processed in the order received. Note: Requests submitted after Dec. 16, 2016 may not be available for student use until after Winter quarter instruction has begun.
  • Winter quarter electronic reserves materials that have been processed will become available to students via the Course Reserves system beginning Jan. 4, 2017.

Interlibrary Loan Requests

  • Interlibrary Loan requests requests submitted Dec. 22, 2016 through Jan. 3, 2017 will be processed in the order received beginning Jan. 4, 2017.

Roger, Circuit, and Melvyl Requests

  • Requests submitted during the closure will be processed in the order received beginning Jan. 4, 2017.
